Udta Punjab: The Punjab That Once Was

Punjab, the land of bravehearts known for their Punjabi spirit is now also infamous for being the hub of drug-addicts and substance abuse. Udta Punjab, directed by Abhishek Chaubey is probably among the first film of its kind to highlight this issue and address it to the world.

Baat aapki aur meri nahi hai, baat hai…Punjab ki.

A rockstar, a migrant labourer, a doctor and a cop have one connection – Drugs. Shahid Kapoor portraying the role of Tommy Singh, the rockstar has undergone a complete change of look and sports long hair, an unkempt beard and of course a chiseled body complete with grungy pants to fit into the role of the rockstar.

While Shahid Kapoor has never failed to make a mark in the industry through his powerful acting skills, the most surprising character that the audience would come across would be that of Alia Bhatt’s. Bhatt, almost stereotypically cast as the cute-bubbly girl is all set to awe the audience with her character of a migrant labourer. Dressed in a salwar-suit complete with a Bihari accent, the actor revealed her look on her Twitter account. Once a daily wage worker, her character will be later become a victim of drug-trafficking in the film.

Kareena Kapoor Khan, who portrays the role of Dr. Preet Sahani will be sharing screen space with her ex-beau Shahid Kapoor after a long time. In the movie, Khan leaves her comfortable life to the heartland of Punjab in order to deal with the alarming cause of substance abuse.

Udta Punjab Cast

Amongst others, singer-actor Diljit Dosanjh will be debuting in the Hindi cinema with Udta Punjab, essaying the role of a cop. Riding high with the success of his latest release Ambarsariya , Dosanjh will be going by the name of Sartaj Singh in the movie.

The music of the movie has been performing exceptionally well since release, especially the psychedelic-trance title track ‘Chitta Ve’. The song talks about drug addiction amongst the youth in Punjab and how they should be overcoming it to find Punjab flying high. Full of intoxicating beats and sensible lyrics, Amit Trivedi has added yet another feather to his cap. Other songs from the movie which are being appreciated are ‘Da Da Dasse’ and ‘Ikk Kudi’.

Recently, the movie garnered support from fans and media alike after rumours surrounding ban on the movie started doing the rounds by the Censor Board. Later, Anurag Kashyap took to his Twitter account to clarify that the film has not been banned and that there will be a few cuts wherein revision in under process.

According to reports, the film came under scrutiny due to its heavy usage of cuss words and the further approval for an ‘A’ certificate. The film will be releasing on 17 June, 2016 and already seems to be creating quite a buzz in the B-Town.
