Storyline: Facts & Controversies
Inspired by the case of naval officer K.M Nanavati versus the State of Maharashtra, Rustom will take you through the controversial judgement of 1959, where Commander Nanavati was tried for the murder of his wife’s lover, Prem Ahuja.
Nanavati, a Parsi naval officer was frequently away on assignments for long periods of time, leaving back his English born wife Sylvia along with their two sons and daughter at home in Mumbai. It was this when Sylvia and Ahuja, Nanavati’s friend fell in love with each other.
As Sylvia felt that she would divorce her husband and marry Ahuja, things went awry when her lover showed disinterest. After being spited in love, Sylvia then decided to open up to her husband about the affair. Nanavati on listening to this, got enraged and landed himself at Ahuja’s house, asking him of the affair. When his friend replied in the negative, Nanavati shot him dead and turned himself into the Deputy Commissioner of Police.
The trial began and garnered humongous public support along with media publicity. The crux of the case was that whether the murder was a premeditated one or something that happened in “the heat of the moment.”
