Gold to gold hota hai, chhora lave ya chhori.
Dangal is a biographical sports drama film directed by Nitesh Tiwari of Chillar Party and Bhootnath Returns fame. Slated to release on 23rd December, the director’s next film stars superstar Aamir Khan. We take you through the details of the movie.
From Patriarch To Trainer
The movie focuses on the life of Mahavir Singh Phogat, an amateur wrestler and senior Olympics coach. Phogat hails from a Jat family in Bhiwani district, Haryana and is presently being nominated for the Dronacharya Award by the Wrestling Federation of India.
He has also coached his daughter Geeta Phogat, who won India’s first ever gold medal in women’s wrestling in the 55 kg freestyle category at the 2010 Commonwealth Games. She is also the first-ever Indian woman wrestler to have qualified for the Olympics.
Blurring Gender Roles
In a state steeped in gender bias, Phogat has brought about a minor revolution in his own way. People have started becoming more aware of female emancipation and many girls from his village seeked the wrestler’s guidance.
Apart from training Geeta, the proud father has also coached Babita Kumari, who has won the Gold at Glasgow in 2014. According to Kumari, her father used to be extremely strict as a coach and their training used to start at 4 in the morning. If they arrived late for the session, Phogat would punish them severely.
It is hard work that pays off ultimately and years of perseverance that has won accolades to the country. Phogat has played an important role in blurring gender roles and redefining the otherwise male-oriented sport of wrestling.
The Becoming Of A Champion
Aamir Khan who plays the role of Phogat in the movie, underwent extreme workout sessions in order to fit into the character. The actor had to initially put on 25 kgs and subsequently shed the same amount in 25 weeks, as he is supposed to portray different ages of his character in the film. This physical transformation required him to follow a strict diet along with a rigorous regime.
Established actor Sakshi Tanwar will be seen playing the role of Shobha Kaur, Phogat’s wife. Vivan Bhathena and Aparshakti Khurrana are also playing important roles in the movie.
The trailer shows us glimpses of the inspirational journey of the Phogat sisters along with the passion of their father.
