Bollywood has gotten bigger than ever with more than 250 movies releasing every year. This year, we saw movies like Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shubh Mangal Saavdhan and Hindi Medium making big numbers at the box office, while most of the big-budget movies like Jab Harry Met Sejal, Rangoon, Tubelight, were bloopers of the year.
2018 is coming with a lot of promises. The year is going to be power-packed with a very interesting line-up of movies. There is so much in the Bollywood bucket. Our top 12 picks for 2018 are:
1. 2.0 (April 2018)
The much awaited sequel to the 2010 blockbuster Robot will be the mega Republic Day release of 2018. Robot, the third highest grossing movie in the Indian history was the story of a scientist, Dr. Vaseegaran (played by Rajnikanth) who creates a robot named Chitti. It showed how this artificial human becomes the enemy of its own master once he develops human emotions. The film displayed fantastic levels of visual creativity. Robot 2.0 stars Rajnikanth and Akshay Kumar in the lead roles. It is going to be an interesting ride to see Kumar playing the antagonist for the first time ever.
2. Aiyaary (26 January)
Sidharth Malhotra and Manoj Bajpayee are coming together in the upcoming crime drama film Aiyaary. The film is directed by the extremely talented Neeraj Pandey and is scheduled to release on 9 February. It is said to be a real life story based on the relationship of a mentor and protege. Pandey has made some striking movies like A Wednesday, Special 26, Baby in the past. Aiyaary is a movie that we are looking out for because of Neeraj Pandey.
3. Race 3 ( Eid 2018)
The third installment of the Race franchise, Race 3 gets bigger than ever with Salman Khan playing the lead role. The first two movies were revenge stories that had Saif Ali Khan playing the protagonist. The film produced by Tips Films will be directed by Remo D’Souza and also stars Bobby Deol. It will be interesting to watch Remo D’Souza and Salman Khan coming together for the first time. The movie is releasing on Eid.
4. Gold (15 August)
Akshay Kumar who had a spectacular 2017 is coming up with Gold in 2018. It is a sports film being helmed by Reema Kagti. The film is based on the life of hockey player Balbir Singh who was a member of the team that won the first Olympic medal for India as an independent nation in 1948. The film is being produced under Excel Entertainment. Lets gear up for another inspiring biopic releasing on Independence Day 2018.
5. Thugs Of Hindostan (Diwali 2018)
Whenever Aamir Khan is associated with a film, it becomes big on its own. With Thugs Of Hindostan, Khan is joining hands with Yash Raj Banner. This period film which is releasing on Diwali 2018 also stars Amitabh Bachchan, Katrina Kaif and Fatima Sana Shaikh. Directed by Vijay Krishna Acharya, the movie is already turning heads with the unique look of Aamir Khan. 6. Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi (27 April)
Kangana Ranaut is ready to play the role of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi in the upcoming epic biopic Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi which is releasing in April next year. Ranaut who is known to play strong characters in her movies has seen a rough patch at the box office this year with Rangoon and Simran falling flat. See if Manikarnika brings her back in the no.“1” race. The film also stars television actress Ankita Lokhande who is making her big screen debut with this one.
7. Sanjay Dutt’s Biopic (30 March)
As much as Sanjay Dutt’s acting prowess is appreciated, his personal life has been quite controversial. Audience will get to see a slice of his life with ace director Raju Hirani’s upcoming biopic. The movie stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. Ranbir Kapoor’s look as Dutt has already generated a lot of curiosity about the film. The movie being produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra also stars Sonam Kapoor, Manisha Koirala and Anushka Sharma. We can’t wait for this brilliant ensemble to bring Dutt’s real story on 70mm.
8. Padman (26 January)
Featuring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, Padman is said to be a movie based on the real life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a Tamil Nadu activist whose mission was to provide sanitary napkins to poor women in rural areas.The movie is directed by R. Balki and produced by Twinkle Khanna. When Mrs Funnybones makes a movie with National award winning hubby Akshay Kumar, it is definitely going to be worth a watch.
9. Raazi (2018)
Alia Bhatt is one of the most talented actors among the younger generation. Her next project Raazi with award-winning filmmaker Meghna Gulzar, is an adaptation of Harinder Sikka’s novel Calling Sehmat. It is the story of a Kashmiri spy married to a Pakistani man during the Indo-Pak War of 1971. Raazi also stars Masaan fame Vicky Kaushal in the lead role. We are eager to see the unusual pairing of Alia Bhatt and Vicky Kaushal.
10. Kedarnath (2018)
Kedarnath has already been in news for quite some time as it marks the debut of the beautiful Sara Ali Khan, the daughter of Saif Ali Khan and his first wife Amrita Singh. The movie is being directed by Abhishek Kapoor and also stars Sushant Singh Rajput. It is a love story that we are looking out for as we are excited to see the upcoming generation of the Nawab khandaan on big screen.
11. 1983 Biopic (2018)
Who can forget the 1983 World Cup match between India and west Indies where Kapil Dev was the highlight of the series. Ranveer Singh is all set to play the role of cricketing legend Kapil Dev in an upcoming biopic based on the 1983 World Cup. The biopic being directed by the Bajrangi Bhaijaan director, Kabir Khan was announced recently. The film will recreate the most memorable moment of the Indian cricket history that gave the country its first world cup trophy when India won against West Indies. We can’t wait for this one for sure.
12. Super 30 Biopic (2018)
The Kaabil actor Hrithik Roshan is all set to star in the Super 30 biopic being directed by Vikas Bahl of Queen fame. It is the story of the Super 30 genius Anand Kumar, an Indian Mathematician best known for his Super 30 which was started by him in Patna in 2002. Kumar coaches economically backward students for IIT-JEE entrance examinations. It is going to be interesting to see how Hrithik Roshan portrays this genius on the big screen.
