Making a place for yourself in the film industry ruled by the Khans, Kapoors, Bachchans and Kumars is quite a difficult task. Rajkummar Rao is one such actor who has carved a niche for himself in the Hindi film industry with power-packed performances.
8 years into the movie business and today Rao has become one of the most celebrated Indian actors standing shoulder to shoulder with Bollywood A-listers. With each of his movies, Rao has proved his mettle as an actor. He gets into the shoes of the character and makes it appear real on screen. Every time we see his movie, we can’t help but say Rajkummar Wow! Let’s take a look at some of his movies that will leave you in awe of him.
Love Sex Aur Dhokha (2010)
Dibakar Banerjee’s hit Love Sex Aur Dhokha was a bold and experimental movie which marked Rao’s debut. Kudos to him for not choosing a typical masala Bollywood movie to step into showbiz. The movie explores three loosely-linked tales of love, sex and betrayal told through cameras. Rajkummar Rao played the role of a greedy man named Adarsh who uses sex to clear off his debts. He amazed us with his powerful performance and we knew a revolution is about to happen in the film industry.
The movie that brought Rao into limelight was master director Hansal Mehta’s Shahid. It was based on the life of lawyer and human rights activist Shahid Azmi who was charged with flimsy allegations of plotting against the state. Azmi was assassinated in 2010 in Mumbai. The movie narrated the story of humanity under siege. Rajkumar Rao’s performance was applauded in theaters as well as international film festivals. Fearless Rao’s spectacular performance in the movie also fetched him the National Award for Best Actor.
Kai Po Che (2013)
Based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel The 3 Mistakes Of My Life, Abhishek Kapoor’s Kai Po Che is another beautiful film that brought out the best in Rajkummar Rao. Rao played a nerd who dreams of expanding his business of sports into a big one. The movie became a blockbuster with a positive word-of-mouth. Working alongside Sushant Singh Rajput and Amit Sadh, Rao stood out in terms of performance proving that he is one of the finest actors in Bollywood.
With every new release, Rao’s career graph touched new heights of excellence. Another brilliant movie by Rajkummar Rao and Hansal Mehta is Citylights. Rao played the role of Deepak, a family man from Rajashtan who’s forced into unfavorable circumstances due to poverty and debt. Rao’s performance was highly appreciated by the critics as well as the fellow actors. His chemistry with actress and real life girlfriend Patralekha was also loved by everyone.
Playing the role of a Delhi based reporter in Aligarh, Rao delivered a landmark performance. He played the role of Deepu who stumbles upon the story of a Marathi professor in a local Aligarh paper. The movie marked a phenomenal collaboration of Manoj Bajpayee with Rajkummar Rao making it a treat to watch on screen. It was one of the most realistic movies that portrayed the heartfelt emotions of human heart.
Trapped is a film of its kind. Rajkummar Rao played the character of a helpless boy Shaurya who gets stuck in an empty apartment sans food, water and electricity. He managed to deliver an impeccable movie even in a limited space. The story was like a nightmare for most of us. But, Rao’s performance left us in awe of the talent that is hidden inside this man.
Bareilly Ki Barfi (2017)
One crucial movie of 2017 and Rao’s career is Bareilly Ki Barfi, which without any qualm is the best entertainer of 2017. Ashwini Iyer’s conviction in Rao was clearly depicted on screen. Meek Pritam Vidrohi played by Rajkumar Rao was one of our favorite characters played by him. Only a genius actor like him could have portrayed such a smooth transformation of Vidrohi. His body language and dialogue delivery became highlights of the movie. The movie proves that Rajkumar Rao can sweep you off your feet, even if he plays the second lead. You’ll come out rooting for him, come what may!
Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana (2017)
With solid blockbuster performances one after the other, Rajkummar Rao is coming on big screen with his next release Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana. The movie is a romantic comedy where Satyendra (Rajkummar Rao) and Aarti (Kriti Kharbanda) meet for a proposed arranged marriage and end up falling in love with each other. Are we going to see Rao doing an SRK? Lets wait for the movie to release. Nevertheless, it will be a treat to see Rajkummar Rao do the mainstream Bollywood romance.
