The trend of making biopics in Bollywood has been well received by the audience. Over the last few years, we have seen a rise in the number of biopics being made. Brilliant biopics like Bhaag Milkha Bhaag, Dangal, Neerja, Paan Singh Tomar and M.S. Dhoni: An Untold Story have stood out among mainstream commercial cinema smashing box office records.
In the upcoming year, there are many more biopics on the cards that are making us curious. They are based on the lives of some exceptional people from the past and present and have already created a lot of buzz. Let’s take a look at some of them.
Another big biopic releasing in 2018 is Mogul. Starring Khiladi Akshay Kumar in the lead role, Mogul is based on the life of Gulshan Kumar, the founder of T-Series who changed the face of Indian music industry beginning in 1980s. The movie will trace his journey from rags-to-riches and will also bring into light how he was shot dead outside a temple in Mumbai in 1997. The movie will be directed by Subhash Kapoor who helmed this year’s blockbuster Jolly LLB 2.
Saina Nehwal’s Biopic
The biopic based on the life of India’s badminton sensation Saina Nehwal is also in the making. Directed by Amol Gupte, the movie will feature Shraddha Kapoor essaying the lead role. Saina who has won many national and international titles has also won the prestigious bronze medal at the 2012 London Olympics. Portraying one of the biggest badminton players of the country is going to be a big challenge for Shraddha Kapoor.
Akshay Kumar who had a spectacular 2017 is coming up with Gold in 2018. It is a sports film being helmed by Reema Kagti. The film is based on the life of hockey player Balbir Singh who was a member of the team that won the first Olympic medal for India as an independent nation in 1948. The film is being produced under Excel Entertainment. Lets gear up for another inspiring biopic releasing on Independence Day 2018.
The powerhouse of talent, Nawazuddin Siddiqui who has delivered incredible performances in Gangs Of Wasseypur, Manjhi: The Mountain Man, Badlapur, Bajrangi Bhaijaan and Babumoshai Bandookbaaz is coming up with Manto. It is a biopic based on the life of the Indo-Pakistani short-story writer Sadat Hasan Manto. The movie is set to be directed by Nandita Das and promises another incredible performance by Nawaz.
Manikarnika: The Queen Of Jhansi
Kangana Ranaut is ready to play the role of Rani Laxmibai of Jhansi in the upcoming epic biopic Manikarnika: The Queen of Jhansi which is releasing in April next year. Ranaut who is known to play strong characters in her movies has seen a rough patch at the box office this year with Rangoon and Simran falling flat. Let’s wait and see if Manikarnika brings her back in the no.“1” race. The film also stars television actress Ankita Lokhande who is making her big screen debut with this one.
Sanjay Dutt’s Biopic
As much as Sanjay Dutt’s acting prowess is appreciated, his personal life has been quite controversial. Audience will get to see a slice of his life with ace director Raju Hirani’s upcoming biopic. The movie stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role. Ranbir Kapoor’s look as Dutt has already generated a lot of curiosity about the film. The movie being produced by Vidhu Vinod Chopra also stars Sonam Kapoor, Manisha Koirala and Anushka Sharma. We can’t wait for this brilliant ensemble to bring Dutt’s real story on 70mm.
Featuring Akshay Kumar in the lead role, Padman is said to be a movie based on the real life of Arunachalam Muruganantham, a Tamil Nadu activist whose mission was to provide sanitary napkins to poor women in rural areas.The movie is directed by R. Balki and produced by Twinkle Khanna. When Mrs. Funnybones makes a movie with National award winning hubby Akshay Kumar, it is definitely going to be worth a watch.
Super 30 Biopic
The Kaabil actor Hrithik Roshan is all set to star in the Super 30 biopic being directed by Vikas Bahl of Queen fame. It is the story of the Super 30 genius Anand Kumar, an Indian Mathematician best known for his Super 30 which was started by him in Patna in 2002. Kumar coaches economically backward students for IIT-JEE entrance examinations. It is going to be interesting to see how Hrithik Roshan portrays this genius on the big screen.
Who can forget the 1983 World Cup match between India and West Indies where Kapil Dev was the highlight of the series. Ranveer Singh is all set to play the role of cricketing legend Kapil Dev in an upcoming biopic based on the 1983 World Cup. The biopic being directed by the Bajrangi Bhaijaan director, Kabir Khan was announced recently. The film will recreate the most memorable moment of the Indian cricket history that gave the country its first world cup trophy when India won against West Indies. We can’t wait for this one for sure.
The Accidental Prime Minister
One of the most anticipated biopics is the one based on former Indian Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh. Slated to release next year, the movie stars veteran actor Anupam Kher in the lead role. The movie is based on Sanjaya Baru’s book by the same name and will have screenplay written by Hansal Mehta. The movie will first time bring forward the life of media shy Manmohan Singh.
More Bollywood Biopics
Some more interesting biopics are also lined up. Viacom18 Motion Pictures recently announced the biopic of the Captain of Indian Women’s Cricket team Mithali Raj. Aamir Khan is also likely to produce a biopic on the life of astronaut Rakesh Sharma that will be helmed by Mahesh Mathai. Actor Sonu Sood has also planned a biopic on badminton sensation P.V. Sindhu. Another biopic is announced by filmmaker Ram Gopal Verma on the life of V.K. Sasikala who was a close aide of late Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa.
