From being one of the biggest box office successes of 2017 to being the most talked about Bollywood movie on Twitter, Raees has left its mark everywhere. Starring Bollywood Baadshah Shah Rukh Khan in the lead role Raees was the first blockbuster of 2017. Helmed by Rahul Dholakia, the movie was much-applauded for pulling SRK out of his arms-spreading romantic avatar and presenting him as the bootlegger Raees Alam. As the movie completes one year today, let’s take a look at the various reasons that made it memorable:
A Pacy Entertainer
From brilliant acting of Nawaz and SRK to the teasing oomph of Sunny Leone, Raees had all the ingredients to be a commercial success. The movie was entertaining right from the beginning till the end. There wasn’t a single moment that was stretched. Everything, every character, every song, every dialogue was on point. It was one of those few movies that keeps you hooked till the end.
“Koi bhi dhanda chota nahi hota aur dhande se bada koi dharam nahi hota”
This dialogue is one of those that will be remembered for years to come. Raees was full of such phenomenal dialogues. Be it SRK or Nawaz, every dialogue made the audience clap and chant them over and over. “Raees ka aur mera rishta bada ajeeb hai, paas reh nahi sakta aur saala door jaane nahi deta”, the fans couldn’t keep calm when Nawaz said that with those intense eyes. We can’t move ahead without mentioning this one by SRK- “Jo dhnade ke liye sahi vo sahi. Jo dhande ke liye galat vo galat. Isse jayda kabhi socha nahi”
Just one last, before you read ahead- “Saboot le aayi hai, le jaiye ,Raees haazir hai”
Starting with SRK, his fans don’t really need a reason to head to the theatres as long as they know he is featuring in the movie. His charm drove millions to the cinemas. Moving on to the gorgeous Mahira Khan, after winning hearts with her TV soaps, she came on the big screen of Hindi cinema for the first time. Everybody was excited to see her. Icing on the cake was presence of the power-house of talent Nawazuddin Siddiqui, who aced his character as always.
From his introduction scene, lacerating his back during a Moharram gathering to his many moments simmering with rage, Shah Rukh Khan stood out throughout the movie. Nawazuddin Siddiqui equally shines in his role of IPS Jaideep Ambalal Majmudar in this crime-drama. His presence as an incorruptible police officer obsessed with taking Raees down, and the thrilling interplay between both of them kept us entertained. Mahira Khan too left an impressive first impression.
The Mobster With a Heart of Gold
Raees was a staunchly secular humanist. Rahul Dholakia featured Shah Rukh Khan in a character that is written once in a lifetime. Raees came as a throwback to those thrilling gangster films from the 70s, where the gangster hero was the messiah of people. Raees Alam too was there for his people when they were going through the worst. His endearing goodness won hearts.
The Zaalima Rage
When the makers released the first song from the movie, they wouldn’t have imagined the response that came from people. Songs come and become hits or super hits, Zaalima became a sensation. Voiced by Arijit Singh and Harshdeep Kaur, Zaalima was everywhere. Caller tunes, weddings, parties, restaurants, restrooms, offices, metros, all you could hear was Zaalima. The song became a rage and SRK’s lover boy avatar became a blockbuster, yet another time.
