Being an actor comes with its challenges. Apart from memorizing lines and mastering expressions, their very appearance affects how well they are able to portray the characters that they play. While some roles require an older look, others demand specific types of facial features. Such transformations are not easy. However, thanks to the highly skilled makeup artists today and the many varieties of products and prosthetics that are available, creating unbelievable looks is not impossible. Here are ten of the most impressive makeovers that made the most famous faces almost unrecognizable at the first glance.
10. Aishwarya Rai- Sarbjit
Sarbjit was a biopic based on the life of an Indian farmer who was imprisoned and accused of terrorism in Pakistan. Aishwarya Rai played the role of Dalbir Kaur, Sarbjit’s sister. Her look underwent many changes throughout the film. From a youthful face to a de-glam avatar, all of them were quite impressive. But the most striking of the scenes included her aged, bespectacled face. The challenging task of giving the former Miss World a convincing, old look was accomplished by leading celebrity makeup artist Subhash Shinde.
9. Kangana Ranaut- Tanu Weds Manu Returns
Makeup designer Vikram Gaikwad was the man behind Kangana’s unusual new look in Tanu Weds Manu Returns. Kangana played the double role of Manu from the first film and Datto, a Haryanvi athlete who had a striking resemblance to Manu. The simple, short-haired look of Datto was achieved after trying several wigs and permutations. Also, about 10 different sets of dentures were experimented with before anything could be finalized.
8. Shahrukh Khan- Fan
The look of Gaurav Chandna, an obsessed Fan of a star, who also looks like the star, was created by Oscar-winning makeup-artist Greg Cannom. Known for his work in movies like Dracula, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button and Mrs. Doubtfire, Cannom made use of silicon cheeks, eyebrow pieces, a fake nose and dentures to transform the 50-year old Shahrukh Khan into a 25-year old Gaurav. Cannom was also able to make SRK’s dimples disappear for the role!
7. Priyanka Chopra- Mary Kom
Priyanka’s look in the biopic Mary Kom was a challenging one to achieve. A lot of effort was put in to create boxing scars and other details that would make the actor look more convincing as an Olympic bronze medallist boxer from Manipur. The credit for this look too goes to Subhash Shinde.
6. Hrithik Roshan- Dhoom2
Hrithik’s role in Dhoom2 included multiple changes in his looks. The actor played the character of a high-functioning thief, also a master of disguise. The many disguises included those of a dwarf, a porcelain statue, an old janitor and the Queen of England. Prosthetic makeup artist and hair technician Sjaan Gillings made the remarkable transformations possible.
5. Rishi Kapoor- Kapoor and Sons
If you hadn’t realized, the 90-year old Kapoor, in the 2016 movie Kapoor & Sons was Rishi Kapoor. Oscar-winning artist Greg Cannom again created magic by perfecting the wrinkled, balding and yet jolly face of the character. It took a painstakingly long 5-hour session to complete the makeup before the camera could start rolling!
4. Akshay Kumar- 2.0
The posters for the upcoming sci-fi thriller 2.0 feature Akshay Kumar in a never-seen-before, beastly appearance. Renowned makeup artist Sean Foot gets credit for the remarkable blue features and highly realistic details on Akshay’s demonic face. Apparently, the actor will portray a scientist who is able to transform himself into a crow.
3. Deepika Padukone- Chandni Chowk to China
Deepika Padukone played a double role in Chandni Chowk to China and one of the characters had to look Chinese. So, stylist Mallika Bhat and celebrity hair stylist Ryan D’Rozario worked together for the same . They painted the actress three shades lighter than her real complexion. The team also spent hours on perfecting the eye make-up so that they would look narrower. Finally, a specially cut wig gave her poker-straight, fine hair that is characteristic of Chinese women.
2. Rajkummar Rao- Raabta
Rajkumar Rao played the role of a mysterious 324-year old man in the 2017 romantic thriller Raabta. The heavily wrinkled, tattooed and pierced look rendered him completely unrecognizable. Having starred in movies like Queen, Hamari Adhuri Kahani and Trapped, Rajkumar’s look for Raabta was a drastic step from all the roles that he has played earlier. Prosthetic make-up expert Zuby Johal worked with a team based in Los Angeles to create Rajkumar’s look.
1. Amitabh Bachchan- Paa
Nothing can be more fascinating than a man in his 60s play the role of a 12-year old! As amazing as Bachchan’s portrayal of a child suffering from a genetic disorder was, equally remarkable was the look that completed his performance. Academy Awards winning makeup artist Stephen Dupuis spent hours in designing the look for Paa as well as flawlessly bringing it to reality.
