Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanju has been in the making for a very long time. Interestingly, the makers of the film chose not to share any official posters or clips till now. And this added to the anticipation for this biopic on one of the most controversial actors in Bollywood.
There is no doubt about the fact that Sanjay Dutt’s life has been a roller coaster ride laced with danger and drama in equal measure. Hailing from a family of cinema legends, it was no surprise that he’d rise as a film star himself. The surprising part came when his stardom began to be overshadowed by mystery. From a following of die-hard fans to brushes with the underworld, Dutt faced it all. And Sanju explores all of those successes and tragedies beautifully.
The teaser for Sanju is a light-hearted take on the actor’s addiction problems, holding an AK47, prison sentences and bankruptcy. The teaser also balances these out by highlighting the colorful roles that he played in his movies, his kindness and adorable mannerisms. All of which, by the way, are acted out flawlessly by Ranbir Kapoor. The resemblance between the two actors is shocking. It is not just the amazing makeup that perfectly recreates Sanjay Dutt’s varying looks. It is also the little nuances that Ranbir Kapoor has picked up from Dutt to fit into the role. Ranbir’s performance is so convincing that you’d wonder if the two actors could be identical twins!

When it comes to biopics on film stars, the area is highly unexplored in Bollywood. With the exception of Milan Luthria’s The Dirty Picture, there are hardly any notable movies that show the behind-the-scenes reality of a film star’s life. This is what makes Sanju such a fresh whiff of air for movie buffs and critics alike. From what we can see from the teaser and the posters, the movie appears to have stayed close to reality in more ways than one. The film also stars Sonam Kapoor, Manisha Koirala, Paresh Rawal, Anushka Sharma, Dia Mirza, Tabu and Jim Sarbh in crucial roles of real-life actors and professionals closely associated with Sanjay Dutt.
It is evident that Rajkumar Hirani has faithfully documented the highlights of Sanjay Dutt’s journey and kept it fresh with a balance of humor, heartbreak and struggle. Hirani is also the one who revived the actor’s career with the 2003 comedy Munnabhai MBBS.
