It is quite refreshing to watch our favorite Bollywood actors experiment with their choice of films. And taking a break from mainstream Hindi cinema is one such choice. Acting in a language that they have not tried speaking before, truly puts their skills to test. Here is a list of 10 such examples.
1. Anusandhan (Bengali), 1981: Amitabh Bachchan
Anusandhan was an adaptation of the Bengali novel “Anushandhan” by Shaktipada Raajguru. Starring Raakhee and Amjad Khan along side Amitabh Bachchan, it remained one of the highest grossing Bengali movies for years. It was also simultaneously shot in Hindi under the title Barsaat Ki Ek Raat. The film is set in a small village in Darjeeling. Bachchan’s performance as a savior to a blind girl (played by Raakhee) and then, to an entire village received widespread appreciation.
2. Thamizhan (Tamil), 2002: Priyanka Chopra
This political thriller introduced Priyanka Chopra as a leading lady. With acclaimed stars like Revathi and Nassar by her side, Priyanka did manage to make a mark. The film’s dialogues particularly got the spotlight.
3.Shadows of Time (Bengali), 2004: Irrfan Khan
Shadows of Time is the first feature-length film by Academy Award winning German director Florian Gallenberger. Set in the early 1940s, the story revolves around two child laborers who end up turning surprisingly ambitious. Irrfan Khan plays the role of a customs officer named Yani Mishra. The film received multiple awards and accolades at an international level.
4. Made in USA (Malayalam), 2004: R. Madhavan
R. Madhavan is known for his exceptional performances in Hindi as well as in Tamil cinema. However, Made in USA introduced him to Malayalam films in 2004. The actor appeared as a barman named Roby Thomas, the central character of the story. The film also had an English release under the title Nothing But Life.
5. Aishwarya (Kannada), 2006: Deepika Padukone
Aishwarya is a remake of the Telugu rom-com Manmadhudu. Introducing Deepika Padukone to Kannada cinema, the film was one of the top five blockbusters of the year. The film also broke several box office records within the first week of its release.
6. Ek Niranjan (Telugu), 2009: Kangana Ranaut
Ek Niranjan stars Tollywood heartthrob Prabhas as the male lead opposite Kangana Ranaut. Set in Hyderabad and shot mostly in Bangkok, the film revolves around a bounty hunter whose life changes after he reunites with his long-lost parents. Kangana’s role is that of a guitar teacher who is the first to stir up real emotions in the protagonist.
7. 2.0 (Tamil), 2018: Akshay Kumar
2.0 is a sequel to the 2010 mega hit Enthiran featuring superstar Rajnikanth in the lead. And Akshay Kumar appears in a brand new avatar. Not only is this his first Telugu movie but also one where he plays the antagonist for the first time.
8. Sammohanam (Telugu), 2018: Aditi Rao Hydari
Aditi Rao Hydari has explored South Indian cinema with her performances in Tamil and Malayalam. But this is her first time acting in a Telugu romantic entertainer. Sammohanam is a Mohanakrishna Indraganti directorial and features Sudheer Babu as the male lead.
9. Bucket List (Marathi), 2018: Madhuri Dixit
Bucket List marks Madhuri Dixit’s debut in Marathi cinema. A Tejas Vijay Deoskar directorial, the film focuses on the different roles played by a woman throughout her life. Produced by Karan Johar, the film also stars Renuka Shahane and Sumeet Raghvan in critical roles.
10. Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy (Telugu), 2019: Amitabh Bachchan
Megastar Chiranjeevi’s ambitious period flick, Sye Raa is based on the life of legendary freedom fighter Narasimha Reddy who was captured and publicly hanged in 1847. Made on a grand budget, the film features some of the biggest stars of Telugu cinema. However, one of the major highlights of the film is the fact that is marks Amitabh Bachchan’s Telugu debut!
