A Death in the Gunj marked the directorial debut of Konkona Sen Sharma and the critically acclaimed actress did not disappoint in her new role! Not only did she bring together some of the finest actors in one frame but also, created a unique story that is no less than a masterpiece. On one hand, there were veterans like Om Puri and Tanuja and on the other, names like Jim Sarbh, Tilottama Shome, Kalki Koechlin and Vikrant Massey. Toilet: Ek Prem Katha featured superstar Akshay Kumar and Bhumi Pednekar in the lead roles. It was a satirical love story revolving around the problem of insufficient toilet facilities in rural areas. The film also highlighted the issue of open defecation in public spaces and emphasized on the importance of sanitation.

Another Rajkummar Rao starrer, Newton was India’s official entry for the prestigious Oscars 2017! 5. Lipstick Under My Burkha

Lisptick Under My Burkha is a dark comedy with an open-ended conclusion. With an ensemble cast comprising of Konkona Sen Sharma, Ratna Pathak, Aahana Kumra and Plabita Borthakur, the film highlights the taboos faced by women in a conservative society. Although every character has an independent story, they all express and explore a collective desire for freedom.

Another movie that stole hearts in 2017 was Secret Superstar. An Advait Chauhan directorial, the film narrated the endearing story of a school girl who realizes her musical dreams. In addition to that, the film beautifully addressed issues like patriarchy and domestic violence.
USP: Plot twist you wouldn’t see coming!
Inspired by the 1969 film of the same name, Ittefaq narrated a murder mystery in a unique way. While the gripping plot keeps you on edge till the end, the odd twist in the climax leaves you restless. Also, the film had some of the finest performances by Siddhartha Malhotra, Sonakshi Sinha and Akshaye Khanna.

Packed with some of the most powerful dialogues in 2017, Rahul Dholakia’s Raees was a blockbuster. In addition to introducing Pakistani star Mahira Khan to Bollywood, the film also portrayed Shah Rukh Khan in one of his most impressive avatars. Inspired by true events, the film offered the right mix of drama, emotion, action and romance.
10. Tiger Zinda Hai
USP: Thrilling action.
Tiger Zinda Hai is a sequel to the 2013 blockbuster Ek Tha Tiger. Just like the earlier film, it turned out to be a blockbuster. While the film is packed with daredevil action sequences, it also showcases remarkable on-screen chemistry among the cast members.
