Havildar Ishar Singh led the 36th Sikhs Infantry Regiment at an army post in the village of Saragarhi, now in present-day Pakistan. In August 1897, the area was extremely volatile due to the constant attacks of tribal Afghans. Although the British had partially succeeded in getting control of the area, the attacks resumed at a surprising rate. And when 10,000 Afghans invaded the post, the Sikhs, just 21 in number, chose to fight to death. Kesari chronicles this incredible example of bravery.
The film is an Anurag Singh directorial, marking his return to Bollywood after a decade. The primary shooting locations for the film include parts of Wai, a small town 150 km from Mumbai. Bringing together the elements of self-sacrifice and courage, the film is a promising attempt at showcasing extraordinary bravery on screen.
