Movies minted massive numbers at the Box Office in India in 2019. Indians watched more than 2200 movies in theatres in the year gone by. Paytm movie trends showcased Delhi to be the top city with biggest moviebuffs followed by Chennai on number 2 and Mumbai on number 3. Among Tier-2 cities, Jaipur, Lucknow and Visakhapatnam emerged as the ultimate movie fanatics.
40% of Ticket Sales were for Regional Movies
A large part of Paytm movie trends in 2019 were influenced by regional movies. Tamil movies like Bigil, Petta and Viswasam topped the charts. Telugu movies stood second with blockbusters Maharishi, Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy and F2. The third most popular language was Marathi with Thackeray movie being a favourite. Other languages and movies that made a mark were Malayalam’s Lucifer, Kannada’s Kurukshetra and Bengali’s Password.
Most preferred Special format for Hollywood movies
Clear sound, better picture quality and an unforgettable experience- audiences loved the IMAX difference. With over 5 lakh tickets sold for IMAX screens, it became the most preferred special format for watching Hollywood movies.
What was the best time for watching movies?
People in metro cities enjoyed watching movies at night while the audience of non-metro cities spent their afternoons witnessing the magic unfold on the silver screen.
Favourite movie-genre of India was…
A little bit of drama (actually a lot) hurt nobody! Among a variety of genres like comedy, action and thriller, drama movies standing at 25% became the top genre choice of the year. Action movies made it to the second position at 20% followed by thrillers at 18%.
And the award for the top movie of 2019 goes to…
While many blockbusters graced the Box Office in the past year, the star-studded event of the decade Avengers: Endgame emerged as the number 1 among movie-goers. 50% of tickets sold for Avengers: Endgame were for Hindi, Tamil and Telugu. At the peak of bookings, Endgame saw 1400 tickets sold per minute on Paytm.
Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Kabir Singh’ and Prabhas-starrer ‘Saaho‘ were the next best loved movies. Thalapathy Vijay’s ‘Bigil’ (Tamil) claimed the title of the top regional movie, followed by Mahesh Babu’s Maharshi (Telugu) and Diljit Dosanjh starrer Shadaa (Punjabi). Overall, Tamil movie bookings increased by 78%, Telugu movies saw a leap of 116% and Punjabi movies grew by 20% on Paytm.
Top actors of 2019:
With four blockbusters under his belt, the Khiladi of Box Office Akshay Kumar made his way to becoming the top actor. Hrithik Roshan and Ayushmann Khurrana dazzled on the 2nd and 3rd position, respectively. Among the actresses, Kiara Advani made it to the top rank with three super-hit movies, followed by Shraddha Kapoor with 2 mega hits and Kriti Sanon with 4 big movies.
When north met south and vice-versa:
India proved to be one big movie-buff family with regional movies being appreciated as much as Bollywood movies. Chiranjeevi’s Sye Raa Narasimha Reddy and Rajinikanth’s Petta found some crazy fans in north India. Mainstream Bollywood movies like War and Kabir Singh raised the movie mania meter in southern part of India.
